Windows 8 Upgrade – “Something happened to the installation”

November 23, 2012

I spent a long time attempting to upgrade my laptop to Windows 8. After seeing the “Something happened to the installation” error repeatedly I followed all the on-line advice to no avail. Instead I decided to try un-installing some software.

Finally I found that it was the Prey security software that was causing the issue. If you are using this simply remove it and your upgrade should work.

Many people online are also reporting that the following software can also cause problems:

  • McAfee Antivirus
  • MagicDisk
  • Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller driver

Also remove these if you have them.

Removing Prey prevented the first error however I still got error later in the installation process. I decide to give up on the upgrade and do a fresh install.

I suspect that my ‘Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller‘ driver was causing the problems as this continued to cause problems in Windows 8 and is relted to the Intel USB 3.0 driver listed above.
