Why Your Balcony Solar Savings Might Be Way Too Optimistic
April 19, 2026
Balcony solar is finally arriving in the UK. After years of strong adoption in Germany and across Europe, we’re starting to see these plug-and-play systems appear in British homes. It’s genuinely exciting news for anyone interested in renewable energy and lower bills.
But there’s a problem. In all the enthusiasm, the maths is starting to look rather optimistic.

The Claims Don’t Add Up
You’ve probably seen posts claiming that an 800W balcony solar kit will save you money, some might claim over £600 per year! It’s an attractive figure, but it’s based on a pretty dodgy assumption: that your panels will get 8 hours of peak sun, every single day, without fail.
Anyone who lives in the UK knows this isn’t realistic. Despite the occasional sunny stretch, we simply don’t get that much consistent sunlight. It’s one of those numbers that sounds good in marketing copy but dissapoints after installation.
The government’s own estimate of £70 to £150 per year is far more grounded. The problem is that it’s such a wide range. That gap between the low and high estimate can actually double your payback time, which makes a real difference to whether a system makes financial sense for your particular situation.
The Real World is Messier Than the Calculator
This is why I built the Balcony Solar savings calculator. I’ve spent years working with plug-and-play solar and battery systems, and before that helped build off-grid solar products used in nearly 1 million homes. I wanted to use that experience to create something useful, and accurate.
The calculator doesn’t assume perfect conditions. Instead, it builds in the reality of living in a UK flat or house:
- Your panels might not be perfectly placed
- They could be slightly shaded or gather dust over time
- Battery systems have losses when charging and discharging
- And, you might not be at home at midday on every sunny day to use the energy when it’s being generated
These aren’t minor factors. They can meaningfully reduce the savings you’ll actually see. Ignoring them is why so many savings estimates are misleading.
Building on Previous Work
If you’ve read our earlier post about Balkonkraftwerk: Clean Energy for All Homes, you’ll know how this technology works. These systems typically include small solar panels, a microinverter, and sometimes a battery. The Balcony Solar calculator is designed to help you understand what realistic savings might look like for your specific setup, given the UK’s actual weather patterns and your home’s conditions.
Using the Calculator
It takes under a minute. In three simple steps, you enter details about your flat or house, your location, and the system you’re considering. You’ll get a realistic estimate of potential savings based on actual UK solar data, plus a clearer sense of which system might work for your situation.
